Wyoming Child Drowns During School Field Trip to Pool: Confidential Settlement

Jun 01, 2009

The Spence Law Firm, LLC, has settled a wrongful death case against the Green River Recreation Center and the Sweetwater County School District, on behalf of the family of a young child who drowned in an undersupervised swimming pool without adequate lifeguards. On Halloween of 2007, Paige Hardesty Greve drowned while on an understaffed school field trip at the Green River Recreation Center pool withough adequate lifeguards. The Green River Recreation Center required, as a prerequisite to the school field trip, that White Mountain Elementary provide a certified lifeguard to help watch the children. The lifeguard on duty believed that a 5th grade teacher who arrived in a swimsuit and who was walking around the pool was the certified lifeguard designated by the school.

The teacher had no lifeguard or CPR training. Only one lifeguard had been assigned to watch sixty-three (63) children in the pool. The lack of supervision led to Paige's drowning that went unnoticed.

The case settled for a confidential amount in 2009. Additionally, both the school district and recreation center changed many of their policies and procedures to prevent a similar tragedy in the future. The Recreation Center agreed to offer free swim lessons to the community's children in honor of Paige Hardesty Greve.
