Common Injuries Suffered in Wyoming Auto Accidents

Apr 17, 2015

With auto accidents, one simple mistake can change your life forever. On the highways, it only takes a split second of distraction to cause a collision. While trucks traversing our state and railroad crossings abound, it is not unusual for major accidents to make the evening headlines in Wyoming.

Of course, even minor accidents can have significant implications. It does not always take high speeds to cause a serious injury from a car crash. The following are some of the most common injuries our attorneys see in auto accident litigation:

  • Traumatic brain injuries. Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in auto accidents can result from significant impacts to the head (called "closed" injuries), from whiplash-like acceleration/deceleration of a victim's head during a crash, or from projectiles or debris penetrating the skull (called "open" injuries). Loss of consciousness does not mean that there may not be a serious and permanent brain injury. Unfortunately, many traumatic brain injuries are often overlooked or not diagnosed because people and health care providers fail to recognize that a head injury or concussion may have more severe long-term consequences. TBI can result in impairments to the victim's cognitive, emotional and behavioral faculties. Symptoms from TBI are not always easy to identify, so it is important to seek medical attention right away if you hit your head in a collision.
  • Neck, back and spinal cord injuries. Whiplash is one of the most common auto accident-related injuries. Whiplash occurs when the neck stretches and then quickly snaps back into place – typically due to the restraining effect of your seatbelt during a violent collision. Crashes can also cause herniated discs and spinal cord injuries, such as fractured vertebrae which may lead to full or partial paralysis.
  • Internal injuries. Internal bleeding, lung injuries and other internal traumas are exceedingly common, but also difficult to diagnose at the scene of an accident. Symptoms of internal injuries can take days, weeks or even months to begin to manifest. As a result, any time you are involved in a serious collision, it is important see your doctor for a full exam.

If you have suffered these or any other serious injuries in an auto accident for which someone else is responsible, an experienced attorney will work to help you recover for your medical bills, lost wages, suffering and other losses.

Fatal Vehicle Collisions

Sadly, serious injuries sometimes turn fatal. While no one should have to deal with the loss of a loved one due to someone else's negligence, the reality is that accident-related deaths can – and do – occur. Brain, spine and internal injuries are some of the most likely to turn fatal. Whether your loved one died at the scene of the accident or put up a fight before succumbing to his or her injuries in the hospital, you may be entitled to financial compensation as a result of their wrongful death.
