Pool Defect in Utah Pumps Chlorine Gas Into Water, Nearly 50 People Sick

A public pool in Pleasant Grove, Utah recently spewed dangerous chlorine gas into the water in high quantities due to a pump malfunction. According to authorities in the area, nearly 50 people fell ill and showed signs of chlorine gas exposure.

Symptoms of chlorine gas exposure generally manifest as:

• Bloody nose
• Nausea and vomiting
• Difficulty breathing
• Fainting

While breathing significant amounts of chlorine gas can be fatal, it is believed that none of the few dozen people afflicted by the Pleasant Grove pool incident experienced life-threatening complications. However, a total of 26 people were transported to nearby hospitals via ambulance, and another 20 or so took themselves to medical centers after the scare. Some people reportedly needed the assistance of breathing apparatuses, including three young children who were admitted to Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICU). Common symptoms from this dangerous exposure might include: coughing, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, confusion, lightheadedness, nausea, and vomiting.
